TODDLER CLASSES

Creative Movement

Ages: 3–4 years (nursery level)

Music and movement expression for toddlers. Imagination, music, and play are the main tools through which children of this age discover rhythm and movement. Improvisation, role-playing games, percussion instruments, and the constant alternation of sounds, movements, colours, and sensory stimuli provide the necessary foundations for developing motor skills. Music and movement education—drawing on approaches such as those of Émile Jaques-Dalcroze and Carl Orff—supports children in expressing emotions, coordinating their limbs, and developing spatial and temporal awareness in a joyful and engaging way.

Dance Foundations

Ages: 4–5 years
Music and movement education combined with the basic principles of dance. Rhythm, music, and movement come together with creativity and imagination in this preparatory dance class. The lesson includes structured dance exercises of increasing difficulty (barre, centre, and floor work), alongside improvisation and rhythmic activities using percussion instruments and music from around the world. This class prepares young dancers for correct body alignment and gradually introduces them to the foundations of classical and contemporary dance.

CHILDREN & TEEN DANCE CLASSES

Ballet

Ballet is a structured dance class taught according to the Vaganova method. It focuses on technique, correct posture, rhythm, concentration, and control of movement. Students are introduced to classical music and works from the global repertoire, while developing aesthetic awareness and discipline.

Classical Dance – Vaganova Method

There are various styles of classical dance (ballet), often named after their country of origin. At our school, we follow the system developed in Russia in the early 20th century, known as the Vaganova method, named after the dancer who codified it. Key characteristics of the Vaganova method include expressive movement and the use of the entire body in every combination—“I dance with my whole body.”

Contemporary Dance

Students learn fundamental movement principles, with technique focusing on suspension and gravity, changes of levels, and the use of personal and surrounding space. Exercises take place on the floor, at mid-level, and standing, while combinations and choreography enrich movement vocabulary and physical ability. Through contemporary dance, students explore different movement qualities and strengthen the entire body. Techniques taught include Release, Limón, Graham, and others.

Improvisation

Guided by imagination and supported by various improvisation methods and practices, students free the body and explore their individual movement identity. Training includes stage presence, improvisational techniques, and the structural elements of performance. The goal is to develop responsiveness to external stimuli and familiarity with improvisational practice.

Modern Dance

Fast-paced step changes, explosive moments, rhythm-driven movement, and choreography set to favourite music. A dynamic form of physical training inspired by contemporary dance styles, offering greater freedom of expression beyond purely technical forms.

Breakdance

Breakdance is a dynamic form of expression combining dance technique, physical strength, and creativity. Students learn foundational movements while developing flexibility, balance, and rhythm. From the streets of New York in the 1970s to today’s global dance scene, breakdance draws us into its rhythm and culture.

ADULT CLASSES

Adult Contemporary

Participants learn core movement principles, with technique focusing on suspension and gravity, changes of levels, and spatial awareness. Exercises take place on the floor, mid-level, and standing, while combinations and choreography expand movement vocabulary and physical capability. Contemporary dance allows participants to explore varied movement qualities and strengthen the whole body.

Biannual Performance

Every two years at Metaxoto, we present a performance that brings together all the technical and artistic skills developed through our training.

Through the stage experience, children have the opportunity to apply everything they have learned about the art of dance in a real performance setting. Our inspiration comes from the knowledge gained in class, the theoretical material covered, the technical abilities of each group, and the rich global repertoire of dance. This is one of the key reasons our school stages a production every two years: to ensure thorough preparation of our students, both theoretically and practically.

Our facilities are designed to the highest standards, offering one of the most high-quality dance spaces in Crete. The school features two fully equipped practice studios, one theory classroom, and a performing arts library, supporting both physical training and research. Additional amenities include changing rooms and WC facilities, as well as a dedicated residency room for visiting artists.

Our Facilities

The space meets all dance school specifications, is fully accessible (AMEA), and kid-friendly, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all ages. With professional music and technical equipment, the facilities are ideal for hosting performances, workshops, seminars, screenings, and professional residencies providing a secure, inspiring setting for artistic creation and exchange.
