Metaxoto Projects

Since 2019, dance has been the medium through which we tell the most exciting stories of our summer.

The Metaxoto Summer Dance School runs every July in Chania, Crete. For two weeks, children and teenagers take part in intensive dance training. The aim of the programme is to strengthen young dancers and provide an alternative form of summer education and creative expression.

The programme runs daily from Monday to Friday, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, and is open to children and teenagers aged 11 and above. Children under the age of 11 may be accepted upon prior arrangement. Classes include classical and contemporary dance, improvisation, choreography, strength and conditioning, and repertoire from both classical and contemporary dance. The programme also includes a weekly educational visit to a cultural venue, encouraging interaction between dance students and other art forms. We enrich the mind with inspiration and train the body every day.

Biannual Performance

Every two years at Metaxoto, we present a performance that brings together all the technical and artistic skills developed through our training.

Through the stage experience, children have the opportunity to apply everything they have learned about the art of dance in a real performance setting. Our inspiration comes from the knowledge gained in class, the theoretical material covered, the technical abilities of each group, and the rich global repertoire of dance. This is one of the key reasons our school stages a production every two years: to ensure thorough preparation of our students, both theoretically and practically.

Teen Project Koukouli

Since 2025, the KOYKOYLI Teen Project at the Metaxoto Dance School has provided students with the opportunity to present their own original choreographic work.

Through short classical and contemporary dance pieces, created and curated by the students themselves, young dancers share their artistic voice as part of their ongoing studies at the school.

The Koukouli (Cocoon) symbolises a period of deep transformation and personal development, while also representing preparation and inner creative process. Their art evolves, and their dance invites us into their world..

RiRe:Researcher in Residence

The Metaxoto Research in Residency Programme aims to provide visiting artists with creative space, technical support, and the opportunity to develop new work in open dialogue with the local community. Through workshops, open rehearsals, and public presentations of works, the programme fosters artistic exchange and strengthens the impact that each project leaves in Chania.

Graduation Evening

The graduation evening is dedicated to the children who, as they complete school, also complete a first cycle of dance studies within our community, with our heartfelt wish that they fly as far as they can in their next steps—whether in dance or beyond. In June 2025, the Metaxoto Dance School presented its own interpretation of the classical work Giselle, featuring choreographies created and performed by the school’s classes.

Video Dance

Dance is not limited to the stage; it also comes alive through the lens. The videodance works we create offer an alternative way of bringing together movement, creativity, and cinematic narration.
